Flying the DNA

Hi All A class sailors .

I hope this video, which was shot  in two sessions  on the lake by my home, (with Gopro camera on the helmet and one time on the boom), will make clear to all skeptics that flying an A class is not only for the Americas' cup pro's.
You see, the way of lifting on the foils is controllable , very fast and lot of fun .
The skills you need are manageable. Off course you need to be fit to get the max out of it. Just like surfing or skiing. But not dangerous.
The best sailors off course will always get more out of it, that is the way it should be.
The Quest for changing the rules is useless . The rules pushed us developers in the right direction!
The boat still is simple, elegant and extremely fast . See the vid . Effortless doing 23 kn peak speed at a deep angle.
And what is unique on the configuration: the boat is upwind and in light conditions still fast !  An A  class which has super stable L foils (which are not complying with the rules ) , willmaybe be easier to sail downwind, but will surely suffer upwind and in light wind, and will be a headache to manage onshore and in shallow waters.
The boards used in the video are our newly developed " Z boards" which give great allround performance, ease of control and are going like a Boeing.
After flying for a year with the J boards , which are also very very fast, the Z boards are a development from that to make life easier.
All the new A class like they are now ( also our fellow manufactures like Exploder and Sheurer etc ) are a dream to sail , a true result of a development class .
Stop debating , start flying, and most of all enjoy it !

Hi,

This is an email to inform you of the latest DNA developments.

Sailing fast cats caught my attention in the early ‘80s and after graduating from the Delft Technical University as an industrial designer I was very keen on establishing my composite boating company (Holland Composites) in 1992 to explore new lightweight production techniques. Building >15 meter yachts with carbon prepreg since 1994, we have made quite a bit of progress since those early days. Not just the yachting industry, but even more in the building and industrial industries where we developed many very innovative products.

The A-cats were a hobby and when things got more serious in 2010 after having developed a new design with Arno Terra and Rudo Enserink, I thought it would be wise to split those activities from Holland Composites as the hobby and professional work might not mix well during office hours. This is how and why I founded DNA, both as a brand and as a collective at the same time. Within DNA we cooperate intensively with open-minded experts such as Mischa Heemskerk, Rudo Enserink and Peter Johnstone to keep pushing boundaries and explore new possibilities in the widest sense of the word whilst having fun out on the water.

Keeping things really separated with my normal job during daytime has however been a struggle at times and to make things more easy & to offer a better DNA customer experience we have now decided to integrate DNA as a brand for fast cats into Holland Composites. The companies have been reunited to make it one family. Some of you know the name Holland Composites already, as Holland Composites is developing and building the Gunboat G4 for example although we do more than boating projects. My partners Sven Erik Janssen and Thijs van Riemsdijk, the first a (passionate) sailor and the other not (yet) handle the integration.

What changes for DNA A-cat customers is that sales of boats and parts are now handled by Holland Composites directly and no longer by Remco of Sailcenter. So the guys that already produced the DNA A-cats and know every detail from the earliest development will now also assist with the sale. A webshop is in the making to make ordering a customer-friendly process and will launch somewhere 2015. Remco has offered DNA customers great service since Arnos departure in 2013 and he will be happy to do so in the future for service or non-standard items. For all your custom needs we ask you to work with a chandlery as Sailcenter.

Another development is that we have reached an agreement with Fiberfoam whereby they will exclusively produce our tapered DNA masts. Fiberfoam will also continue with their own standard design. The first 10 DNA masts have just been manufactured by Fiberfoam, complete with carbon mast base and adjustable carbon spreaders.

I would almost forget.. The very fast 2015 Z-daggerboard and incredibly sweet L-rudders have completed their testing protocol and are now available for purchase.

For any questions or orders In the meantime I kindly ask you to direct your questions to DNA@hollandcomposites.nl.

At Holland Composites, we are working hard on the Gunboat G4 which is in many ways a DNA A-cat on steroids. However, there is much more going on than this big boat only and in the next few months we will be working on a new website full of the latest details with tips and tricks.

You may have seen the video footage from Mischa or myself, showing consistent foiling and I thought it would be appreciated if we would add some pictures with details of the latest 2015 DNA A-cat.

Please see below.

Any questions or remarks, please drop us a line at DNA@hollandcomposites.nl, thanks!

The tapered DNA masts are nowadays produced exclusively for DNA by Fiberfoam. Fiberfoam continues to offer their #14 mast (untapered).

We developed the tapered DNA mast in 2012, and it is a different section than the commonly used 145x60 mm untapered section.

The base idea was to create a mast which follows the twisted sail shape in a more natural way. See the simulation of the flow on below computer animation.
flow simulation DNA A-cat mast

The result is a top tapered mast, but the shape also varies over the length of the mast, I hope that below illustration shows the principle.

The section is tapered from approx 160x60 mm in the bottom to 130x45 mm in the top. The mast base shape is identical to the common 145x60 mm section for the ease of interchanging parts. The surface area is also identical, to avoid sailarea problems when sails which are made for standard masts are used.

We believe this tapered mast has a better aerodynamic shape compared to the standard section, this results in less drag, better flow attachment and better performance. It did take quite some time to develop our mast and to make it reliable and well-performing. However now that is sorted, especially when sailing at close angles, as happens with high apparent wind speeds, this mast is superior.

The angle before losing flow is definitely smaller the standard section, which is great when you need to point high, or want to have a super flat sail in flat water high wind conditions .

All bend specs are available, and the mast curve is slightly more progressive than the others which is what you may want.

Give me a call, or drop me a message at dna@hollandcomposites.nl for more info.

Cheers, PJ

Hi all,

Hope you won't mind seeing a blog from an A-cat newbie. Working at Holland Composites whilst being keen on writing and seeing lightweight multihulls moving around our facility day in, day out, it is rather difficult to ignore the still growing excitement & passion and share some of this enthusiasm.

PJ already wrote about the Gunboat G4 project we have undertaken at Holland Composites. Following the conceived concept by the DNA design team, and Gunboat committing to a realization the G4 had to be built and more people got involved - such as myself. I thought A-cat sailors might appreciate seeing what a small boat from a very prolific development class can just lead to..

More relevant A-cat news next time, promised.

Best, Thijs

On his brand new DNA straight out the box Bruce wins the the midwinters serie in FL, USA.
Just a  close call with Woody cope, sailing the c boards Nikita.
Especially on the second more windier day, Bruce made a lot gain by foiling very consistent downwind. According to Bruce the new L rudders are adding greatly to the stability during foiling.

See some pics of the foiling action and some close ups.

European season started

This week the  first bigger championship of the season is on the program : the French Nationals, near Marseille.
A good fleet is expected with mainly French boats .
We are curious how ours French DNA guys are doing !   best luck and good winds !

In the mean time on the other side of the ocean The North Americans start this weekend .
A great  50 + boats fleet also there on the line . Great to see the A class is good health everwhere.
Off course still a lot of discussion about the class developments the last years.  Not all sailors are
100% happy about the foiling revolution . We can understand.  Change always results in resistance of part of the people involved .
But we may conclude that the majority of the A cat lovers are excited about the development, and that the class is growing as the foiling challenges people to try it.

An interesting picture I found on the web is this one of reigning  US champion Bruce Mahoney  ( and our bet for this year too) shows a hiking-foiling-mode on his new Z boards / L rudders DNA:

In two weeks The Italian nationals are scheduled on Lake Garda .
A great  top level fleet is expected  including Mischa Heemskerk (NED), Chris Field (GBR) and Sergio Mehl ( ARG) on the latest DNAs
Interesting to see them lining up with the best Sheurers and Exploders !
Stay tuned and have fun sailing your boats !

The new long video of the Punta Ala A class worlds 2015

The DNA F1

After Punta Ala we set up a team to just consider new ideas and design directions. That design team was again Pieterjan Dwarshuis, Mischa Heemskerk as invaluable source of info and Rudo Enserink as designer; all and all the same guys responsible for the G4). By November we had a pretty solid idea of what we could realize and decided to make the jump and invest in a new platform. What you see on these pictures is the result of basically 6 months flat out design work, testing, tweaking and production work.

We went to town for this job.. so many ideas, so many CFD checks, so many difficult goals. What we pulled off in the end is in our opinion a very high quality, high-spec boat. Obviously the main driver was to develop the ultimate optimized boat, and optimized within the class rules. Pictures paint a thousand words but we would like to shed a light on what everyone will see when looking at attached pictures. If you look at the vid, do not mind the shaky footage.. If you think about it, you will be pleased to see we have spent the money on engineering and tooling rather a pro gimballed piece of camera (it is on the agenda though).

Aero

The 2016 boat is new from the ground up and optimized for extremely low windage . With the speeds we reach both upwind and downwind nowadays, aero drag is a serious factor. If you keep in mind that the total driving force resultant upwind is approximately only around 150 Newton, then you understand that in a situation where the boat is doing 13 knts upwind in a 17 knts TWS, the apparent wind is 30 knts. Coming from a country where cycling is the norm, we love to compare with riding a racing bicycle at 55 km/hr; anyone having tried so will understand the importance of windage very quickly. Our answer to that topic is found partly in the new overall sleek design and an extremely streamlined soft deck (it is no longer a traditional trampoline). The main beam and rear beam have been integrated in the airfoil section, the tiller bar and tillers have been integrated in the airfoil section too and lastly we have a fully recessed traveller track.

Stiffness & lightness

Apart from aero, the platform should be class leading in construction too. We were pleased with the previous model but the new boat is truly optimized for ultimate stiffness and lightness. Now this is for the tech savvy people; its hulls are made in one single production run (so not the traditional two halves laminated together) in the autoclave which allows curing under high pressure and high temperature. As a result there is no secondary bonding, and no bonding lines. The hulls weigh in at 11.5 kg each with high fiber content hull skins at 300 gsm. The airfoil shaped beams are cured in the autoclave too. The standard finishing for the DNA F1 is clear coated carbon, as this is the lightest finishing possible (painting in colour on request).

Foiling

The new design is designed for flying from the very start, opposed to the previous generation platform which evolved into one. We have a new beam and foil positioning with a bigger span between rudder and main foil. The foils have been subjected to optimization with minor improvements and we have a completely new rudder head design which brings drastically improved stiffness due to the bigger span of the gudgeons. Longer tiller arms allow for more precise steering and a completely integrated ‘belt drive‘ rake system on the main foils offers accurate adjustment. The hull shape is optimized for trapezing while flying with an ergonomic hull height in the rear. As last the boats width is optimized for trapezing by giving max beam where practical only. Light wind conditions We believe the new platform provides a vast improvement in light wind ‘drifting’ conditions, we noticed this should be improved from the previous generation. Rocker has been increased, the bow is finer and the new hull shape also includes an optimized indented area around the daggerboard lower exit to avoid excessive drag. The new kinked front beam is ergonomically spot on for good downwind flat positioning and steering.
